In 1931 Adelia Santoso followed the monsoon from Banda to Manila, painting what she was handed in each port and noting how it smelled. Each port is a chapter of four scents.

Under the volcano
I came ashore in Banda with paints, a stack of paper and one change of clothes. The volcano stands across the water from the harbour. By four o'clock its shadow reaches the boats.
